"Happiness is the joy we feel while striving for our potential."
- Ancient Greeks
You naturally have a baseline of happiness, but you can move the meter fairly far on your own. Try any of these happiness boosters below. Create a routine or ritual around them and see if you can establish some new happiness rituals.
-
Smile and say hello to as many people in a day as you can.
-
Each morning, write down 3 new things for which you are grateful.
-
Write in detail one meaningful experience you’ve had in the last 24 hours.
-
Write a handwritten note or email every morning praising or thanking someone.
-
Do 15 minutes of fun cardio + 15 minutes of meditation, silent or led.
-
Choose something you’re looking forward to and write every detail about it.
-
Visualize what you’re looking forward to. Your brain can’t tell the difference between your visions and reality.
-
Random acts of kindness are happiness multipliers. You have so much power to share happiness. Do it.
Remember this
-
The brain will always process negativity and noise before finding meaning. To stay centered and present, keep negative thoughts and noise to a minimum.
-
Worry is literally just noise in the brain.
-
Don’t think about whether you’re looking at life half full or half empty. There is always a pitcher of water that you can easily choose to refill.
-
Practice opposite patterning. For example, if you’re worried something will be bad, repeat the mantra “All will be well."
-
Decrease hypotheticals and avoid quantifying or validating your unhappiness.
You have the ability to be happy. And doing a few simple things won't take much more effort out of your day. But the returns are immense. You have so much power to share happiness, so try it!
